The Shed
Middle and High School students began meeting under the banner of CTC in the 2017-2018 school year. Needing no prompting from adults, the students immediately sought to explore opportunities for creating a youth link or recreation center.
The Shed is a long-anticipated youth hangout space located in the heart of Telluride, Colorado. After years of community advocacy and recent construction efforts, The Shed is poised to offer a safe, inclusive, and substance-free environment for teens who reside within the Telluride R-1 School District. Open weekdays until 8 p.m. (10pm on Fridays), The Shed provides a welcoming space for students of all backgrounds — including those in public, private, and homeschool settings — to gather, relax, and connect with peers and local support organizations.
Located in the 700-square-foot Voodoo development space next to the Telluride Post Office, The Shed was originally intended for commercial use. Recognizing an opportunity to invest in the community’s youth, the Town of Telluride reimagined the space as a vibrant hub for youth engagement. In partnership with the Town of Mountain Village and San Miguel County, all three government entities are working together to provide essential support for The Shed’s operational costs.
Operations and programming for The Shed will be managed by Communities That Care (CTC), a nonprofit program under Tri-County Health Network. CTC will partner with various youth-focused organizations, including True North, One to One Mentoring, San Miguel Resource Center, Younglife, and others. The facility is set to open as a dedicated gathering space for teens, with direction on usage and programming provided by a youth advisory board. This board’s primary focus will be to enhance the health and well-being of all Telluride’s youth by providing a safe and welcoming environment.
The Shed’s creation responds to growing concerns highlighted in the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey, which revealed troubling mental health and substance use trends among the region's youth. Community members, local governments, and parents alike have voiced strong support for the project, seeing it as a crucial step in addressing the social, emotional, and recreational needs of young people. For many, The Shed represents not just a new facility, but the fulfillment of a decades-long vision to foster a more supportive and inclusive environment for Telluride’s youth.
Big thank you to the Town of Telluride, the Town of Mountain Village and San Miguel County for their partnership! And to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and SBG Productions for their facility donations.
